Safety Director (MSHA)

Location: Watertown South Dakota
Industry: Aggregates Manufacturing/Mining Company
Relocation: Yes ~$25k
Base Salary: $125k-$160k+ (DOE)
Bonus: 18.75%

Position Overview
The Safety Director (MSHA) is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the safety programs and practices within the organization, ensuring compliance with MSHA and OSHA regulations. This role aims to foster a safe work environment, mitigate risks, and promote a culture of safety across all operations.

"The ideal candidate for the Safety Director role will have experience managing a team of safety professionals in Ready Mix, Aggregates, Asphalt, and Transportation sectors and comes with a strong background in workplace safety, regulatory compliance, risk management, and employee training. They are a self-driven, proactive leader who fosters a culture of safety excellence, ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and FMCSA regulations while continuously improving safety standards across multiple operations.  I thought this might help with the search."

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage the safety programs to ensure compliance with MSHA and OSHA regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses to prevent future occurrences.
  • Provide training and resources to staff on safety protocols and best practices.
  • Collaborate with management to develop and enhance safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor safety performance metrics and report on trends and areas for improvement.
  • Stay updated on industry regulations and ensure organizational adherence to legal safety requirements.
  • Facilitate safety meetings and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management, preferably in mining or heavy industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of MSHA and OSHA regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in root cause analysis and safety audits.
  • Certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CIH) is preferred.
  • Experience in developing and implementing safety programs in EHS, mining, cement, or aggregates industries is a plus.
