According to U.S. Labor Statistics, information technology jobs are expected to grow 13 percent from 2020 until 2030. This rate of growth exceeds the average growth rate for all occupations in any other industry.
Not surprisingly, those with in-demand skills will benefit most from this growth and find themselves working in high-paying positions. Below are six of the most in-demand and highest-paying tech skills for 2022.
1. Cloud Computing
Cloud computing continues to be one of the most sought-after skills in the tech space. A Fortune Business Insights report estimates a 17.9 percent growth in the global market for cloud computing. Furthermore, the cloud computing market is estimated to hit a value of $791.48 billion over the next 7 years. That is a lot of potential, and there will be a high demand for corresponding talent in this space.
High-paying cloud computing careers include Senior Solutions Architect ($141,000), Cloud Architect ($135,977), and DevOps Engineer ($121,216).
2. Blockchain
With the rise of cryptocurrencies and NFTs, it is no surprise that there is an ever-growing need for blockchain engineers capable of designing new applications for blockchain technology, such as crowdfunding, identity management, file storage, person-to-person payment systems, and digital voting.
These days, annual salaries for blockchain engineers are approximately $150,000.
3. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
The demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) skills has only grown since the COVID-19 pandemic. An ever-lengthening list of new start-ups and established technology companies are actively looking for candidates with AI and ML skills related to artificial neural networks; data engineering; and overall language, audio, video processing.
High-paying AL and ML roles include Principal Software Engineer ($155,000), Software Architect ($135,107), and Senior Data Scientist ($127,500).
4. Cybersecurity
Cybercrimes are an ever-present, and ever-growing, threat. Companies of all sizes in all industries face cyber threats. Not even governments are immune.
Cyber breaches cause major financial losses and decreased customer trust. And so, not surprisingly, organizations are willing to invest heavily in cybersecurity to avoid falling victim to these crimes. That in turn means good money for those with cybersecurity skills like cloud security, data privacy, threat intelligence, and computer forensics.
High-paying cybersecurity roles include Software Architect ($137,014), Application Security Engineer ($130,809), and Senior Security Consultant ($129,251).
5. Mobile Application Development
Fueled further by Covid-19 and a need for solutions to empower remote workforces, demand for mobile technologies has exploded. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated a 22 percent market growth rate for the period 2019 to 2029. The most-in-demand skills for mobile application development include UI/UX design; backend computing; and as mentioned above, cyber security.
High-paying mobile development careers include Software Architect ($135,900), Android Developer ($120,277), and iOS Developer ($116,807).
6. Internet of Things (IoT)
The last major in-demand tech skills for 2022 are those related to servicing the IoT market. Increasing demand for, and development of, internet-enabled devices is driving the massive growth of the IoT market. And so, those with hardware interfacing, business intelligence, and networking skills are very likely to find work in this space.
In return, IoT engineers can expect to make an average salary of $123,189.
